This summer, Discovery Health presents an all-new series that is sure to keep viewers laughing while they learn by offering a unique combination of valuable medical information and hilarious antics. Starring Leslie Nielsen, DOCTOR*OLOGY (premiering Saturday, July 14, at 8 PM ET/PT), is a blend of slapstick comedy and factual documentary, teaming Nielsen with top medical experts for a tongue-in-cheek- yet informative-look at modern medical practice. With DOCTOR*OLOGY, audiences will gain an insider’s view of the world of medicine from the other side of the stethoscope, while Nielsen reinforces that laughter truly is the best medicine.

DOCTOR*OLOGY navigates the pantheon of “*ologies” in the hopes of demystifying often misunderstood medical specialties-from gastroenterology to cardiology to dermatology-in order to bridge the information gap existing between doctors and patients. As “Uncle,” Nielsen assumes the trademark comedic persona that he made famous in motion pictures such as Naked Gun, Airplane and Spy Hard-this time donning the white coat of a veteran physician.

Acting as a medical tour guide, Nielsen investigates each *ology with his medical student “nephew,” played by David Lawrence. As they journey through the halls of the hospital, Uncle tries to impart his wisdom through a series of hands-on learning opportunities. While Uncle interviews doctors, nurses and medical technicians, his young counterpart is poked, prodded and subjected to a variety of medical 2-2-2 procedures. It’s an engaging combination of slapstick and one-liners, typical of Nielsen’s hit films.

Each episode of DOCTOR*OLOGY focuses on a medical specialty, the part of the body affected, the tests, as well as the machines used for diagnosis and treatment. Viewers learn what doctors are sometimes too rushed to explain and what patients are often afraid to ask. DOCTOR*OLOGY pokes fun at familiar, sometimes uncomfortable situations that come with the hospital setting: not “getting” the jargon, being lost in the wrong wing, dealing with embarrassing bodily functions-while also providing viewers with glimpses of cutting-edge technology and tips for actually avoiding trips to the hospital.

Premiering this summer, DOCTOR*OLOGY will prove to viewers that a spoonful of comedy does indeed help the medicine go down.

DOCTOR*OLOGY premieres on Saturday, July 14, at 8 PM ET/PT with a study of neurology:

DOCTOR*OLOGY: Neur*ology

Parkinson’s disease, depression, epilepsy. It doesn’t take an expert to tell you that the study of the nervous system and nervous disorders is supremely important to our quality of life. As Leslie Nielsen discovers brain medicine, his nephew is subjected to brain imaging, sleep deprivation, exhausting reflex tests … and the neurology vest? In this episode, Leslie also plays with Braingate, a new brain-computer interface developed to help paraplegics transfer thought into moving their artificial limbs.

Other topics covered in the series include anesthesiology, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology and hematology, among others. The series will air weekly on Saturdays at 8 and 8:30 PM ET/PT.

DOCTOR*OLOGY is produced for Discovery Health by GalaFilm Productions. Isabelle Riva is executive producer. Greg Czech is executive producer for Discovery Health.
